Dec. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook Inc., was named Time magazine’s “Person of the Year” today for “creating a new system of exchanging information” and “changing how we all live our lives.”


Zuckerberg, 26, began the world’s largest social-networking site in 2004. The service, with more than 500 million users, has helped people connect with each other and changed definitions of privacy, Time Managing Editor Richard Stengel said in a letter on the magazine’s website.

Zuckerberg created Facebook for college students when he was a sophomore at Harvard University. After opening the site up to people outside of higher education, the company surpassed News Corp.’s MySpace as the No. 1 social network two years ago. Facebook users now post a billion pieces of content, such as photos and messages, every day, Time said.

“There is an erosion of trust in authority, a decentralizing of power and at the same time, perhaps, a greater faith in one another,” Stengel said. “More than anyone else on the world stage, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg is at the center of those changes.”

Zuckerberg is tied for No. 35 on the 2010 list of the 400 wealthiest Americans, according to Forbes magazine. His wealth jumped 245 percent to $6.9 billion, the largest percentage increase on its annual list, the magazine said.

Facebook, based in Palo Alto, California, lets users share information about themselves and communicate with “friends.” About 70 percent of the site’s users are outside of the U.S.

Philippine Beauty Killed in Road Accident




Melody Gersbach, 24, died in a vehicular accident on Saturday morning in Bicol. 2009 Miss International semifinalist Melody Gersbach was pronounced dead on the spot according to Camarines Sur Police.

Melody Gersbach died along with her make-up artist Alden Orense and the driver of their Toyota Innova, Santos Ramos. While Ronald Lita, was rushed to Bicol Medical Center in Naga City with serious injuries.

Based on the police report, 2009 Miss International semifinalist Melody Gersbach and her staff were heading to a beauty contest competition in Naga City known as “Ms. Bicolandia” beauty pageant. On their way along Sitio Banasi in Bula town highway, a passenger bus was traveling fast and collided head-to-head on Toyota Innova.

The reports said that there were also injured passengers in the bus.

The Guevarra Lines bus driver Wilson Fontillas is now under the custody of the Bula Police and waiting for the case to be charged to him.

The Guevarra Lines passenger bus was heading toward Legazpi City from Manila when it tried to overtake another vehicle, causing the head-on collision.

“They did not make it, three of the four people on board the Innova died as a result of the collision,” said Ablang.

Paul the Psychic Octopus Chooses Spain as World Cup Winner!

I thought Paul only exercised his powers with Germany matches, but with his popularity at an all-time high (except in Germany), I guess his caretakers decided to give him an extra mussel to improve their odds to make it on the news again (Spanish TV channel Cuatro went live from Oberhausen for Paul’s feeding time).

And Paul chose Spain with commendable speed.

The question is… Paul has a 100% accuracy record in predicting matches where Germany plays, but not World Cup finals where Germany isn’t playing, so… do we believe him? Don’t we?

He also chose Germany to win the third-place match against Uruguay, in case anyone’s interested.

(for the record, today I’m wearing octopi earrings and an octopus hair-shelot in Paul’s honour…)

The 39-year-old Choi Jin-young, actor and younger brother of the late actress Choi Jin-sil, committed suicide by hanging himself, said police officials yesterday.



"There were no signs of a break-in or violence whatsoever," said an official of the Gangnam Police Station.

"Though Choi did not leave a suicide note, he obviously committed suicide because of depression."

The police decided not to carry out an autopsy, granting a request from Choi's family, said officials.

The actor was found on Monday afternoon after having hanged himself with an electric wire in the attic at his home in Nonhyeon-dong, southern Seoul.

He was moved to a nearby hospital but was dead by the time he got there, said hospital officials.

Choi had been experiencing serious depression recently but refused to undergo professional treatment, according to family members and friends. He was largely reliant on sleeping pills and often complained about his career slump as an actor.

He also refused to attend his classes at the Department of Theater and Film in Hanyang University, which he joined as a freshman last year.

According to his family, Choi battled depression since the death of his elder sister, actress Choi Jin-sil, who also committed suicide in October 2008.



He earlier attempted to commit suicide by taking an overdose of pills last year, according to a close acquaintance. He survived after having his stomach pumped.

He also threatened on several occasions to hang himself, said officials.

"His late sister had always been an intimate friend and acting mentor to him," said an acquaintance.

"Her suicide and the consequences must have left him hollow."

The elder Choi had suffered from the suicide of close friend and actor Ahn Jae-hwan, and also online rumors that she was involved in his death.

The two children of his sister, for who Choi has been acting as guardian, will be left under the custody of their grandmother. Their father, former baseball star Cho Sung-min transferred all of his parental rights to her late in 2008.
