INTERVIEW

I learned that I need the love for wisdom to gain the wisdom of love. This means that to love means to be wiser at making decisions and to be stronger at committing to tougher choices that will be good for me and those that I care about.

Describe your childhood when you were growing up from 8 to 13 years old.

I was raised by my mother who used to work for a non-government organization. I grew up in a family that discussed social issues at the dinner table and that taught us early on about social responsibility. Soon, I knew I had to help my mother in providing for the needs of the family. I worked as a model so I could study at the same time. That way, I was able to help my mom out and send myself to school.

What lessons did you learn from your childhood/growing years?

I learned that I need the love for wisdom to gain the wisdom of love. This means that to love means to be wiser at making decisions and to be stronger at committing to tougher choices that will be good for me and those who I care about. Whether this should be a love for career, learning, spirituality, justice, advocacies, dreams or for people, growing up taught me that to understand love and be able to love means to have a stronger character and a sharper mind. Therefore, if I want to be able to truly love as I live this life, I have to improve myself and work on making myself better. And learning this about love has also made me realize that becoming a better person isn't as simple as making a choice; it takes courage and diligence.

What is your most memorable moment?

When I was 13 and my parents were getting separated, the arrangement was that I stay with my dad while my brother stays with my mom. We had to make a choice. Whenever I would spend time with my mom and my brother, we would eat at a fast food chain halfway between both houses. She would let my brother and I order as much food as we wanted including halo-halo (famous Filipino dessert) and we often ended up getting so full that we could hardly finish all the food. This memory always reminds me of how much love there is between me and my mom and how we will be together through whatever either of us go through in life.

What is your environmental advocacy?

I believe that one great obstacle in implementing actions towards protecting the environment is just marketing. We, Carousel Productions and the Miss Earth Foundation are actually pursuing this strategy to promote our environmental advocacies. Media is a strong key to implementing change and motivating people, especially the youth, into adjusting their everyday activities to support a more sustainable living and participating in volunteering in environmental projects. As Miss Philippines Earth 2010, I plan to use my title to create more awareness of the environmental issues that we are facing today and to emphasize the urgency for actions to be taken.
