INTERVIEW:
My family comes from South Africa. We moved to New Zealand when I was 8 yrs. old. My fondest memories during this period was playing in the snow for the first time in my life, swinging off trees and jumping into the sea water, fishing with my dad and spending hours at the beach with my friends. I learned to be proud of who I am.
Describe your childhood when you were growing up from 8 to 13 years old.
At the age of 8 years old, my family immigrated to New Zealand from South Africa. My perception of the journey to New Zealand was that we were just going on a long holiday until I started school and then realized that New Zealand was going to be home.
Between my parents, they have 12 siblings collectively and the one thing that I do remember missing from my childhood was having my extended family around all the time.
My fondest memories of my growing years during this period , is experiencing playing in the snow for the first time in my life, swinging off trees and jumping into the sea water, fishing with my dad and spending hours at the beach with my friends.
What lessons did you learn from your childhood/growing years?
My biggest lesson was to be proud of who I am , where I came from and to be proud of the color of my skin. I also learned that I had to be truthful to myself before I could be truthful to others. I've learned to embrace and enjoy life and have no regrets but only learn from mistakes.
What is your most memorable moment?
My most memorable moment was when I realized who I am and who I wanted to be. It was a moment I stopped and realized that I had the strength which I never knew I had and all I wanted to do was embrace, strengthen and empower other people. It was then that I realized that God had given me this gift and although there were times when it seemed unrealistic , to see the beauty in the most simplistic things. In that moment, it became the foundation of the woman I am today.
What is your environmental advocacy?
Water conservation. I will promote water conservation as I feel this is an essential to life on earth, saving note only our generation but generations to come.
